Dactylic Hexameter

Dactylic Hexameter is a very important meter in Greek and Latin poetry. It is especially associated with epic poetry, and so is referred to as heroic. The very words dactylic hexameter often stand for epic poetry. Why Dactyl? Dactyl is the Greek for finger. [Note: The Homeric epithet for the goddess Eos (Dawn) is rhododactylos or rosy-fingered.] There are 3 phalanges in a finger and, likewise, there are 3 parts of a dactyl. Presumably, the first phalanx is the longest in the ideal finger, while the others are shorter and about the same length, since long, short, short is the form of the dactyl foot. The phalanges here refer to the syllables; thus, there is a long syllable, followed by two short ones, at least in the basic form. Technically, a short syllable is one mora and a long is two morae in length of time. Since the meter in question is dactylic hexameter, there are 6 sets of the dactyls. The dactylic foot is formed with one long followed by two short syllables. This may be represented with a long mark (for example, the underscore symbol _) followed by two short marks (e.g., U). Put together a dactylic foot can be written as _UU. Since were discussing dactylic hexameter, a line of poetry written in dactylic hexameter could be written like this:_UU_UU_UU_UU_UU_UU. If you count, youll see 6 underscores and 12 Us, making up six feet. However, dactylic hexameter lines can also be composed using substitutions for the dactyls. (Remember: The dactyl, as stated above, is one long and two short or, converted to morae, 4 morae.) A long is two morae, so a dactyl, which is the equivalent of two longs, is four morae long. Thus, the meter known as spondee (represented as two underscores: _ _), which is also the equivalent of 4 morae, can substitute for a dactyl. In this case, there would be two syllables and both would be long, rather than three syllables. In contrast with the other five feet, the last foot of the line of dactylic hexameter is usually not a dactyl. It may be a spondee (_ _) or a shortened spondee, with only 3 morae. In a shortened spondee, there would be two syllables, the first long and the second short (_ U). In addition to the actual form of the line of the dactylic hexameter, there are various conventions about where substitutions are likely and where word and syllable breaks should occur [see caesura and diaresis]. Dactylic hexameter describes Homeric epic meter (Iliad and Odyssey) and that of Vergils (Aeneid). It is also used in shorter poetry. In (Yale U Press, 1988), Sara Mack discusses Ovids 2 meters, dactylic hexameter and elegiac couplets. Ovid uses the dactylic hexameter for his Metamorphoses. Mack describes a metrical foot as like a whole note, the long syllable as like a half note and the short syllables as like quarter notes. This (half note, quarter note, quarter note) seems a very useful description for understanding a dactylic foot.

The Beach by Alex Garland Analysis Paper There are some travelers who see a â€Å"paradise† as their final destination; however, it may end up to be exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This can be seen in Alex Garland’s The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard, Francoise, and Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise, within Thailand. Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopia-like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. Throughout the story, the theme of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through symbolism such as the â€Å"cancer† of traveling and the destruction that it brings. â€Å"I†¦show more content†¦Along the way, Richard left behind instructions on how to get to the island for Americans that they met along the way. Mainly because it is in a secure area, it can be inferred that someth ing bad will eventually happen on the islands, thus creating a clear image of how the cancer spreads. The spread of this cancer initially starts when Daffy shares the secret beach with Richard and his friends, who later shares it with other travelers. By the time they arrive on the island, Richard, Etienne, and Francois discover that the beach is right next to another island with fields that cultivate marijuana which can also foreshadows negative events to happen. For a while life on the island started out perfect, like a true utopian society as Richard states â€Å"‘You fish, swim, eat, laze around, and everyone s so friendly. It s such simple stuff, but... If I could stop the world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I d restart it like this. For everyone.’† (Beach 106.) However, right when life on the beach paradise started to seem perfect, a chain of unfortunate events began to occur. A shark attack took place causing the severe injury in one member and the death of another and after becoming an outcast from the rest of the community, the man who was injured was later killed. Concept Exams: There will be 4 exams in this course. The content will vary but it will always address concepts we’ve gone over in class and the reading assignments. Each exam is worth 25 points. Essays: There are four essays required in this course. Each essay must follow standard MLA guidelines which require the following format: * Your paper must be typed and double-spaced with one-inch margins on each side. * On the first page, you must write your name, my name, course title and date in the top left hand corner. * Your title must be centered. Capitalize principle words. Do not underline, bold-face, italicize, or do anything else to it. You can only use 12-point Calibri. * Your last name and page number must appear on the top right hand corner (header) on each page except the first one. You can refer to the MLA links provided online to find examples of MLA format. Further essay requirements will be elaborated on in class. Each essay is worth 100 points. Essay Revision Policy: You may revis e and improve the grade of Essay 1 and Essay 2. However, in order to submit a revision for a better grade, you must do the following: 1) Enroll in Eng N91 and discuss your rough draft with your Writing Center instructor before you submit the essay to me. Provide proof that you have discussed your rough draft with WC instructor. ) 2) Submit your essay on time. No exceptions. 3) After you receive your grade, discuss graded essay with me before or after class so we can discuss your revision plan. 4) Submit the revised essay to me before the revision due date. **Note: If you do not meet all of the above-mentioned criteria, I will not accept your revision. You are responsible to meet all of the criteria and know all relevant due dates (see Course Outline); I will not remind you. Late Policy for Essays: Please submit your essays on time. All of our essays will be submitted online. Be aware that unwanted computer/internet/electronic issues arise and you should allow yourself enough time to deal with such issues should they occur. Critical Thinking Paragraphs: Nearly each class session you will be given 5-10 minutes to write a paragraph in response to various prompts. Please save all your critical thinking paragraphs. At the end of the semester, I will collect them. These are worth 100 points total. Attendance Policy: You have four excused absences. After that, your grade will be deducted by 25 points. There are no exceptions to this policy. I suggest you reserve your excused absences for emergency situations. Please note that although the first four times you miss class it is â€Å"excused† and no points will be deducted just for being absent, you will not be allowed to make up any points that are earned the day you have missed. (For example, if we take a pop quiz that day for 10 points, you will not be able to make up those points. ) Also, if you are absent, you are responsible to get any material or information you have missed from a classmate or from me during office hours. Do not email me for the material/information. Also, you do not need to email me to let me know you will be absent. And please do not explain to me (via email or in person) why you were absent as you will have 4 excused absences and be penalized thereafter no matter what the circumstance. Tardy Policy: If you are not in class when class begins, you will be considered tardy. If you are more than 20 minutes late you will be considered absent. You will be excused from being tardy thrice; you will be deducted 15 points for each time you are tardy after that. The same policy applies to leaving before the nd of class. Please do not email me to let me know you will be tardy and please do not explain to me why you were late. However, if you have to leave early, I would appreciate you letting me know before class so I do not worry about you when you get up and leave. Make Up Policy: Although your absence may be excused, any exams you need to make up will be deducted by 50%. Participation: Part icipation is worth 100 points. Your participation grade is based on how much you are contributing to class discussions and if you are contributing to a positive and edifying atmosphere.
